The Need
Based on a district-wide facility study and analysis of space and program needs, it has been determined that the district’s most pressing issues are at the middle school. Although Park View has served as a middle or junior high school for 50 years, it was originally built as a high school in 1956 and has had minimal updates since. Below are the challenges identified:
- Some of the major building systems, including plumbing, heating/ventilation, and electrical, have exceeded their service life and need to be replaced.
- Sections of the roof need to be replaced.
- Exterior brick requires maintenance, and windows are inefficient.
- Classroom flooring, lighting, ceilings, and casework need to be replaced.
- The hallways are narrow and congested, and the overall layout of the building is inefficient.
- Student pick-up/drop-off is congested, creating safety concerns.
- Classrooms are small and lack space for student collaboration.
- Technical education/hands-on learning areas are too small and outdated.
- The kitchen and cafeteria are congested with long serving lines.
- Some areas do not comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
- More gym space is needed for physical education and community programming.
- The choir and band areas are too small to meet current enrollment, lack proper acoustics, and are difficult to access and supervise because of their location.
